| Following is an approximate translation of the script of the Sheikh’s khutba All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. May Allah confer honor and safety upon Prophet Muhammad, upon his family, upon his companions, and upon those who follow their approach. Today’s khutba is entitled “Good Manners.”Allah the Almighty describes Prophet Muhammad as having great manners; He says: “Surely you are indeed of a magnificent character”[1] (Q. 68:4).Mentioning some patterns of good behavior that characterize the pious, Allah the Exalted says: “Those who repress their anger and pardon people.”The Messenger of Allah, may Allah confer upon him honor and safety, says: “I was sent in order to complete and consolidate good manners” (Recorded in Malik’s Muatta’ and Ahmad’s Musnad).Emphasizing the importance of good character, a Muslim poet says what means: “It is good manners that keep communities alive. Thus, people would perish if their good manners perish.”Abu Hurayra, may Allah be pleased with him, quoted the Prophet, may Allah confer upon him honor and safety, as saying: “It is beyond your capacity to make your kindness in terms of gifts and donations—your money— encompass all people. Thus, let your kindness encompass them by letting a smile brighten your face when you see them and by treating them with good manners” (Recorded by Abu Ya‘la).When ‘A’isha, may Allah be pleased with her, was asked about the character of the Prophet, may Allah confer upon him honor and safety, she said: “He behaved in accordance with what the Qur’an says,” and she recited the first nine verses of chapter 23 (al-Mu’minun, or the believers). God says: “Prosperous are the believers who are submissive in their prayer, who turn away from ill speech, who pay the zakat (the poor-dues), who guard their chastity…, who observe their trusts, deposits and covenant, and who preserve their prayers.” Upon reading these verses, ‘A’isha, may Allah be pleased with her, said: “This is the character of the Messenger of Allah.”Al-Nawwas b. Sam‘an, may Allah be pleased with him, asked the Messenger of Allah, may Allah confer upon him honor and safety, about the concepts of righteousness and vice, and the Prophet said: “Righteousness is having a good character, whereas vice is any suspicious matter that leaves you uncertain whether to do it or not and that you do not like people seeing you while doing it” (Recorded by Muslim).Abu al-Darda’, may Allah be pleased with him, quoted the Messenger of Allah, may Allah confer upon him honor and safety, as saying: “Good manners are the heaviest thing that can be put onto the scale of a believer on the Day of Resurrection. And God does not like the one who uses foul language” (Recorded by al-Tirmidhi, who graded this hadith as hasan sahih).On the authority of Abu Hurayra, may Allah be pleased with him, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah confer upon him honor and safety, said: “Believers who have the most complete belief are the ones who have the best manners. And the best ones among you are the best ones toward their women” (Recorded by al-Tirmidhi, who graded this hadith as hasan sahih).‘A’isha, may Allah be pleased with her, narrated that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah confer upon him honor and safety, said: “It is through good manners that a believer can achieve the high status of a person who spends his day in fasting and his night in praying” (Recorded by Abu Dawud).Commenting on this hadith report, Ibn al-Qayyim said: “If a person behaves with good manners toward people with their various characters and personal traits, he would be as if he were performing jihad, struggle, and endurance with lots of people. This is why he reaches the lofty status of a person who constantly fasts every day and prays every night. Both of them would share the same degree. And probably he might surpass this level.”Abu Umama al-Bahili, may Allah be pleased with him, related that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah confer upon him honor and safety, said: “I guarantee that a person would have a house within the precincts of Paradise if he does not get into argumentation even if he is truthful in what he says. I also guarantee that a person would be granted a house in the midst of Paradise if he does not lie even when he is kidding. And I guarantee that one would be awarded a house in the highest point of Paradise if he has good manners” (Recorded by Abu Dawud with a sound chain of narrators).Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah confer upon him honor and safety, said: “Among the ones who are most beloved to me and who are nearest to me on the Day of Resurrection are those who have good character. On the contrary, the ones whom I detest the most and who are farthest away from me on the Day of Resurrection are those who talk a lot [in a way that makes them transcends the boundaries of the truth], those who talk a lot [in a way that is intended to impress others with the eloquence of their speech], and those who talk a lot [in an haughty way that is intended to make others feel inferior]” [Recorded by al-Tirmidhi, who graded this hadith as hasan]. All of us should strive for having good manners and good character so that love, mercy and rapport would prevail among us. If we examine the history of spreading the message of Islam, we can find that the people of many countries accepted and embraced Islam by virtue of the good manners of those who call upon people to Islam, especially because of their truthfulness and merciful nature.O Allah! Improve our manners, provide us with good manners, guide us to good manners, purify us from bad manners, and make our harts in harmony, rapport, and concord.I ask Allah the Great to forgive me and you and to forgive all Muslims.
