Today’s khutba will be on the sadaqa of volunteering.

Allah says in Surah Baqara Verse 261: ... The example of those who spend in the way of Allah is just like a grain that produced seven ears, each ear having a hundred grains, and Allah multiplies (the reward) for whom He wills. Allah is All-Embracing, All-Knowing.

Saeed bin Jubayr interpreted “fi sabeelillah” to mean in obedience to Allah

The servants of Allah knew that spending their wealth in obedience to Allah is one of the best acts of piety to Allah. Indeed Allah exemplified to us the 700 manifold increase of grain in order to emphasise this in our minds, as this signals to how Allah multiplies good deeds of good doers in the same way He multiplies produce to those who sow goodness into the earth.

Allah says in Surah al-Zalzala Verse 7-8:So, whoever does any good act (even) to the weight of a particle will see it. And whoever does evil (even) to the weight of a particle will see it.”

In a chain to Ibn Omar, Ibn Abi Hatim narrated the following hadith. He asked the Messenger of Allah for what reason was “The example of those who spend in the way of Allah...” revealed. To which the Messenger of Allah said “Lord, increase the fortune of my Ummah”, and “Who is the one who would give Allah a good loan so that Allah multiplies it for him many times? Allah withholds and extends, and to Him you are to be returned.was revealed. He then repeated “Lord, increase the fortune of my Ummah” and Verse 10 of Surah al-Zamar was revealed “Say (on My behalf) “O My servants who believe, fear your Lord. Those who do good deeds in this world will have a good return, and the earth of Allah is wide. Certainly those who observe patience will be given their reward in full without measure.

My Muslim brother, my Muslim sister, if the reward for sadaqa is multiplied on the Day of Judgement, then in praiseworthy sadaqa and charity there is reward on a whole new level, encompassing this life and the next, and the recompense of those who give sadaqa and charity is preserved by Allah. They will be saved from the trials of the Day of Judgement when others are panicking, and they will not be sorry for that which they received in money, and children and delights of this world, as indeed they aimed for the best of it all.

Allah says in Surah al-Baqara verse 262: “Those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah, then do not make their spending followed by boasting about favour, or with causing hurt,- they have their reward with their Lord and there is no fear for them nor shall they grieve.

The Messenger of Allah said “Indeed Allah has people to whom others turn for their necessities, they are those who are safe from the punishment of Allah”

Know that sadaqa protects its practitioner at times then they are most in need. The Prophet said that every human will be in the shade of their sadaqa on the Day of Judgement until judgement between people is passed.

Know that sadaqa is the path to Janna and one of the reasons for entrance. Allah says in Surah Imran Verses 133-4 Race with one another towards Forgiveness from your Lord and towards a paradise the width of which spans the heavens and the earth. It has been prepared for the God-fearing,-the ones who spend (for Allah’s sake) in prosperity and adversity, and those who control anger and forgive people. And Allah loves those who are good in their deeds,”

Oh Muslims spend of your wealth which Allah has blessed with you with, and He will spend of His on you. Does it escape you that Allah will return to you that which you spent? Know that there is no day in which the servants wake up without which two angels calling, one of whom says: “Oh Allah give the spender success” and the other of whom says “Oh Allah give the miser misfortune”.

And the Messenger of Allah said to Bilal “Bilal spend and do not hold back from the One of the Throne if only a little, and however much your poverty and lacking may be try to give sadaqa along with others, and never give little to your relatives”. So this is the trial of the one with few means, which the Prophet said “the best of the sadaqa is that of the one with few means, and never with the one who counts their wealth”

Oh Muslims the beginnings of your charity to your relatives will never escape you, for indeed the sadaqa to the distant one in need is sadaqa and to the relative in need it is sadaqa and a familial link.

And if Allah has ordered you to provide for others, to give nafaqa (familial support), then to act as though you are giving a gracious gift or as if it does harm to give to this person, for this negates sadaqa, as does greed and reputation. In Surah Baqara Verse 264 Allah says about those who act in order for others to say they are generous “O you who believe, do not nullify your acts of charity by boasting about (doing people a) favour and by causing (them) hurt, like the one who spends his wealth to show off before people
and does not believe in Allah and in the Last Day. So, his example is like a rock on which there is dust, then a heavy rain came over it and left it barren. They have no ability to gain anything out of what they have done, and Allah does not give guidance to the people who disbelieve.

Does it please you for Allah to make the Day of Judgement harder for you? The most pure of prophets said “there are three types to whom Allah will neither speak, nor look nor praise on the Day of Judgement and to them shall be a painful punishment: the one who shows off their generosity in that which they give, the one who disparages charitable acts, and the spender whose commodities are from false oaths”.

Oh Muslims in our pious predecessors we have an example and a lesson, indeed they answered to Allah and His Messenger. It is narrated that Abu Bakr and Omar would breath out sadaqa. Omar would bring half of his money and then Abu Bakr would bring all of his money almost hiding it from himself, and the Prophet would say to him “Oh Abu Bakr what have you kept for your family?” to which he said “I have kept for them the Messenger of Allah”

Then Omar would cry “Surely oh Abu Bakr, Allah has kept us back from the gate to goodness until you enter first”. It is said the Verse 271 from Surah Baqara “If you make Sadaqāt (alms) openly, it is good enough, and if you keep it secret and give it to the needy, it is much better for you, and this will write off part of your sins. Allah is All-Aware of what you do.was revealed about these two men.

In Surah al-tawba verse 38 O you who believe, what is wrong with you that when it is said to you, “Come out in the way of Allah,” you turn heavy (and cling) to the ground. Have you become happy with the worldly life instead of the Hereafter? So, (remember that) the enjoyment of the worldly life is but trivial in (comparison with) the Hereafter.” Allah describes Abu al-Dahdah al-Ansari, who asked the Prophet “does Allah want a loan from us”, who responded in the positive. He then asked the Messenger of Allah for his hand, who gave it to him. He then declared that he had loaned his house to Allah, and that his wife and children were inside, and he had 700 palm trees in it. He told them to come out for he had loaned the house to his Lord.

Some good doers hesitate between announcing and keeping their sadaqa secret, but Allah has praised both in Surah al-Baqara verse 271 “If you make Sadaqāt (alms) openly, it is good enough, and if you keep it secret and give it to the needy, it is much better for you, and this will write off part of your sins. Allah is All-Aware of what you do.

So when do we do which? The scholars have said it is better to keep sadaqa secret because it is farther from pride, unless announcing it has a preferable to benefit in order to encourage others to follow suit.

In fact to keep it secret is better due to the saying of the Prophet of the 7 people whom Allah will shade on the day in which there is no shade except His, including the one who gives sadaqa and keeps it secret to the point that their left hand does not know what the right hand gives.

Oh Allah with your mercy make us of those who spend and give charity oh the most merciful of the merciful.
